Piazza Santo Domenico

Overview

In 1956, the Superintendency of Galleries and the Prior of the Church of San Domenico created a museum to gather the exhibits that had been preserved in both the church and the convent. In the lower room, a large collection of exhibits from the 14th to the 18th century can be viewed, including Filippino Lippi's famous "Mystic Marriage of Santa Caterina", Giunta Pisano's Crucifix and Guercino's San Tommaso, as well as a valuable illuminated choir book from the same period and various reliquaries, such as the 15th-century reliquary of S. Tommaso d'Aquino and the finger of St. Louis of France from the 13th century. On display in the upper room are various religious furnishings such as candlesticks, incense burners, chalices and a 17th-century baldachin, which together with the Mantle of the Madonna of the Rosary were offered as a pledge to the people of Bologna in 1630 as thanks to the Virgin of the Rosary for the end of the plague.
