Serre

Overview

Serre is a small village of medieval origin that lies on the slopes of the Alburni mountains, in one of the most beautiful natural settings in Campania. In its territory is the WWF Oasis of Persano, a large green island crossed by the Sele river, home to many species of fish, birds and wild animals such as foxes, wild boars, beech martens, weasels, hedgehogs and the otter, a very rare mammal in Italy. In Serre, in the town of Persano, there is also a vast military area with one of the most beautiful hunting lodges from the Bourbon era. The Reggia di Persano, which can be visited on the occasion of events organised by the Italian Army, is an elegant Baroque palace with a porticoed courtyard, where four octagonal turrets containing original spiral staircases are located at the four corners. In the atrium, there is a large ceremonial staircase with a marble statue of a guard dog, attributed to Canova.

Interesting fact: a prized breed of horse known as the "Persano horse" was selected on the royal estate in the 18th century. It is said that the prancing horse depicted on the coat of arms of Ferrari cars is one such horse!
