Sala Consilina

Overview

In the Vallo di Diano

On the border between Campania and Basilicata, Sala Consilina is a meeting point between roads, cultures, communication routes and commercial hubs. In the area, inhabited since the Neolithic, under the Romans arose the city of Consilium, as documented by several archaeological finds. Noble palaces and fortresses instead testify to the arrival of the Normans, as well as architectural traces of the passage of the Bourbons, in the eighteenth century. Today only ruins remain of the Norman Castle, but you can visit the small church dedicated to the Madonna inside, still accessible.

Among the most interesting religious buildings, note the Church of the Santissima Annunziata and the Church of Santo Stefano with its frescoes. You can not miss a mention of the Grancia di San Lorenzo, a monastery of 1500 square meters. Today it hosts the Accademia Musicale del Vallo di Diano.

If you are in Sala Consilina, do not miss some traditional events that will immerse you in the local culture. Such as the processions of Lu Cindu, every May 17, of the Shooting of the Rooster or feast of Our Lady of the Castle, in September, or the Infiorata on the occasion of the Corpus Domini. In honor of St. Michael, during the Flight of the Angel, a child disguised as an angel is slid on a pulley to the statue of the saint, carrying a gift of incense and flowers.
