Montesano sulla Marcellana

Overview

Located 850 metres above sea level, Montesano sulla Marcellana is the easternmost municipality in Campania. The small village occupies a panoramic position overlooking the entire Vallo di Diano and is immersed in a splendid natural setting, with woods and springs of low-mineral water, such as that of Santo Stefano, where the water destined for the national and foreign markets is bottled. The beautiful spa complex is one of Montesano's main tourist attractions, with well-equipped routes through the trees and impressive panoramic views of the Basilicata mountains.

The historical centre is strongly characterised by the tall spires of the neo-Gothic St Anne's Church, and an interesting Civic Museum has recently been set up, attracting many visitors. Not far from the town, however, the former 16th century Capuchin Convent and theAbbey of Santa Maria di Cadossa, presumably dating back to the year 1000, stand out for their historical importance.
