Atena Lucana

Overview

The historic centre of Atena Lucana is a dense labyrinth of narrow alleys, stairs, arches and small stone buildings. The village is dominated by the Medieval Castle and there are numerous churches to be admired: among the most interesting and oldest, the Sanctuary of San Ciro, which stands on the site of a Roman temple dedicated to the goddess Cybele, with an artistic stone portal from the 17th century. Outside the town centre, surrounded by greenery, the sanctuary of Santa Maria della Colomba offers the cue for a beautiful nature walk.

Atena Lucana is one of the oldest settlements in the Vallo di Diano, as evidenced by the remains of Cyclopean walls dating back to the 4th century BC. Its strategic position on a headland overlooking the valley makes it one of the most interesting scenic centres in the area.
