Cumae

Overview

The oldest Greek colony in the heart of the Campi Flegrei

Campania is a region rich in archaeological sites and in the volcanic area of the Campi Flegrei, on the outskirts of Naples, there are many places to immerse yourself in the traces left by ancient peoples. The archaeological site of Cumae, part of the vast Campi Flegrei archaeological park , is one of them.

Here, on the hill overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea stood one of the oldest Greek colonies, founded around 750 BC and the scene of wars and battles that led, century after century, to its destruction. What has been returned to the public today is the result of major excavations carried out in the early decades of the 20th century, when the main buildings that made up the acropolis of Cumae began to emerge.

Today, the Archaeological Park of Cuma is a vast area in which to explore the ancient acropolis, starting with theAntro della Sibilla on the slopes of the hill, the place where, according to legend, the Cumaean Sibyl divulged her oracles. As we climb, we reach a viewpoint dominated by the remains of the Temple of Apollo and, on the summit of Mount Cumae, those attributed to the Temple of Jupiter.

The lower part of the city, which is open to the public only on special occasions, presents traces of the ancient Forum and its Baths, as well as the Roman Crypt and the Monumental Necropolis.
