Castel Sant'Elmo

Overview

Castel Sant'Elmo - Power, history and beauty

The largest Mediaeval castle in Naples.

The Castle of Sant'Elmo dates back to 1200. Standing on the Vomero hill overlooking Naples, this Mediaeval site today is a museum as well as home to the management offices of the Campania Museum Complex and the Museum of the XIX Century in Naples. What makes this monumental place so utterly splendid is its strategic position offering breath-taking views of the sea, Vesuvius, the islands, the Phlegraean Fields and the Matese mountains. The fortress is one of the most extensive and largest in the city and welcomes a great many visitors every year. Don't miss the visit to the Museum of the XIX Century in Naples with more than 170 works by Neapolitan artists from different artistic schools.
