The Amalfi Coast fjord
Think of the Amalfi Coast and Furore immediately springs to mind - a cleft in the rock, in a wild, natural habitat, framing a small beach just 25 metres away. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997, it has recently been recognised as among the “most beautiful villages in Italy”.
To admire this “Neverland” that looks straight out of a fairy tale, you have to cross the bridge that joins the two rock walls. Here, you can stop for a few minutes to listen to the sound of the waves, so distinctive that, in ancient times, it was named after their wild nature. If you happen to be there at just the right time, you can watch spectacular displays of Fjord Diving – usually organised on the first Sundays of July – in which professional athletes dive from sheer cliffs, almost thirty metres above the sea.
This diamond of the Amalfi Coast embodies the charm and romantic atmosphere of the film L’Amore. Furore was, in fact, the set for this feature film directed by Roberto Rossellini, starring Anna Magnani.
We recommend not travelling there by car, as parking is not readily available around the village. However, you can leave your car in a secure car park in Praiano and hike two kilometres to the fjord in about twenty minutes.
Alternatively, you can take public transport: from Salerno, take the Sorrento-Amalfi bus followed by the Amalfi-Agerola line. Near Furore there is a dedicated stop directly on the fjord bridge.
