Sanctuary of Santa Maria dei Lattani

Overview

San Bernardino da Siena, a well-known Franciscan preacher, founded the sanctuary of S. Maria dei Làttani in 1430, after a shepherd boy from Roccamonfina had found a statue of the Virgin in volcanic stone in a cave, dating back to the 10th century AD.   The architectural and decorative style of the sanctuary, initially Gothic, has undergone several changes over the centuries, with Renaissance and Baroque additions. You can't miss a walk through the arches of the sanctuary's cloister, a place of tranquillity and silence. Every May, a sculpture of St. Anthony of Padua is carried in procession from the sanctuary of S. Maria dei Làttani to the centre of the village of Roccamonfina, during the popular celebration of the Calata di S. Antonio dai Làttani (Descent of S. Antonio dai Làttani), accompanied by music and village festivities.
