Roccamonfina and Foce Garigliano Volcanic Area Regional Park

Overview

A rare variety of natural landscapes enriches the Roccamonfina and Foce Garigliano Volcanic Area Regional Park with aromas and colours. This protected area stretches from the Tyrrhenian coast, where the mouth of the Garigliano river separates Campania from Lazio, up to the 1,000-metre-high volcano of Roccamonfina. The latter is an extinct volcano of very ancient origin, which has now lost the fearsome and dangerous appearance typical of active volcanoes and is instead covered by lush chestnut forests.

Returning to the sea, the nineteenth-century Real Ferdinando bridge, which crosses the Garigliano river just before its mouth, is worth another stop. Inaugurated in the late 1820s, at the time of King Ferdinand II of Bourbon, this bridge was the first in Italy to rest on a single span.
