Roccamonfina

Overview

A dense forest welcomes the traveller to Roccamonfina, an ancient village immersed in the unspoilt nature of the Regional Park Volcanic area of Roccamonfina and the mouth of the Garigliano, which incorporates an inactive volcano that is among the highest in Italy.   The shape of the mountain overlooking Roccamonfina is no longer that of a volcano, but of a hollow valley that has now lost all trace of its volcanic cone. The fertile soil of this area, however, still owes much to its geological origins, which have contributed to the growth of dense chestnut groves that produce delicious fruits every autumn.

Roccamonfina's past is also strongly linked to the event, somewhere between history and legend, that led to the establishment of the sanctuary of S. Maria dei Làttani, located just outside the historical centre. St. Bernardine of Siena himself, an authoritative Franciscan priest, came to Roccamonfina in 1430 after the accidental discovery of a sculpture of Mary dating back to the 10th century AD: from this event, work on the construction of the sanctuary began.
