Piedimonte Matese

Overview

The largest municipality in Matese is Piedimonte Matese, the town near the plateau. The village was a centre of wool and textile production in the 16th and 18th centuries also thanks to the water power it could exploit from the two springs gushing from the massif. The historic village is built of paved stones, with 18th-century buildings and medieval palaces with characteristic ogival windows. A tour of the village allows you to admire the Dominican monastery, with the cloister with valuable medieval frescoes and the Civic Museum Raffaele Marrocco (MuCiRaMa) that collects archaeological and paleontological artistic material. Also interesting are the Church of the Holy Saviour (church of San Salvatore) with polychrome marble interiors and majolica floors and the church of San Biagio of the early fifteenth century, with its ogive door and late-Gothic frescoes
