Matese Regional Park

Overview

Waterfall abseiling and trekking, climbing and mountain biking, horse riding and canyoning, snowshoeing and skiing make the Matese Regional Park one of the most popular outdoor havens in southern Italy. In the centre of this crown of limestone masses, rocky peaks and enchanting high-mountain beech forests you will find Lake Matese. It is one of the highest basins of karstic origin (i.e., without tributary rivers) on the Italian peninsula, and the movement of its waters has been exploited for hydroelectric purposes for about a century.

In the summer, Lake Matese can also be crossed by canoe, an experience recommended for those who want to get to know (and recognise) the different species of birds that live among the reeds and small ponds. Other wild animals populate the surrounding mountain ranges, such as the wolf, roe deer and eagle.  Finally, you cannot leave the Matese Regional Park without having tasted one of its delicious cheeses: especially appreciated is the local caciocavallo, to be eaten fresh, semi-aged or aged.
