Fontegreca Cypress Forest

Overview

A picnic in the Matese Regional Park

In the Matese Regional Park in Campania, there is a cypress forest of about 70 hectares - the largest in Italy - that is an ideal destination for those who'd like to follow a simple but picturesque hiking trail and stop for a picnic in the midst of nature. It is the Fontegreca Cypress Forest, in the province of Caserta, a wild and magical area stretching from the Bosco degli Zappini to the Sava river valley.

The cypress grove is the ideal place for a day in the great outdoors with family or friends, surrounded by flowers, trees (some more than 500 years old), gushing waterfalls and crystal clear pools. Walk along the path that starts at the Shrine of Our Lady of the Cypress Grove and follow the course of the Sava river.

To recover your energy, you can stop for a bite to eat or an open-air lunch at one of the 30 picnic tables scattered throughout the forest, before setting off again.
