Caserta Vecchia (Old Caserta)

Overview

Before King Charles of Bourbon chose the plain of Caserta as his main residence in 1752, the village of Casertavecchia had a small community of residents, isolated from the main cities of Campania. Perched on the slopes of Mount Virgo, which offers splendid panoramic views of the surrounding area, Casertavecchia was the fief of several aristocratic families of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, and then became one of the possessions of the Bourbon dynasty during the 18th century.

Since then, history has ensured that the original Casa Irta, the first place-name of today's Casertavecchia, has become a suburb of the big city, especially loved for its cathedral, a splendid example of medieval architecture. You can visit Casertavecchia on foot, following its steep lanes, paying due attention to its ancient noble palaces, such as Casa Pisano and Casa Ferraiuolo, and above all to the cathedral dedicated to San Michele, the true cultural protagonist of the village. Before continuing the journey, you can't miss a walk through the ruins of the castle of Casertavecchia, east of the historic centre.
