Alife

Overview

Alife is a small town in the Matese area, near Piedimonte, founded in 326 B.C. as an oppidum, i.e. a fortified Roman town. Its layout is very similar to a castrum, with a typical rectangular structure divided into cardi and decumani. What characterises it to this day is its original shape that has remained intact, a rectangle surrounded by walls that have survived for 2000 years, with a watchtower at each corner and two access roads that divide the town into four quarters. The crypt still contains Roman remains. If you are interested in ancient history, there is also a small museum with exhibits illustrating it.
