Archaeological Museum of the Phlegraean Fields

Overview

Attributed by Neapolitan antiquarians, the building's name (Temple of Diana) was determined by the discovery of marble bas-reliefs depicting scenes of dogs and deer, as well as a marble fragment engraved with the name of a goddess. The structure of the building is a large circular hall enclosed in an octagon. Opus listatum was used for the flanks of the arches covering the windows, while opus latericium extends to the attachment of the dome. The latter has an ogival, sectioned shape and is made of progressively projecting rings, built with tufa and brick chips. Due to the presence of natural hot and cold thermal springs, the rotunda could be identified with a natatio.
