Calitri

Overview

It is no coincidence that it is called the Positano of Irpinia, with those narrow, colourful houses clinging to a hill. It dates back to the 13th century, but as testified at the Irpino Museum in Avellino, the area was already inhabited in the Neolithic period. Calitri was the epicentre of the 1910 earthquake, with serious consequences. The village, clinging to a hill, has maintained its characteristic triangular plan and medieval layout, with narrow streets and magnificent views. The town is also known for its bread and ceramics, to which a Museum has been dedicated. Since 2013, every summer it has hosted the Sponz Fest, a festival created and directed by Vinicio Capossela.
