Roman Amphitheatre of Alife

Overview

An imposing amphitheatre dominated the ancient city of Alife. Two construction phases can be observed: the first bears witness to the building's construction with a greater height and a large arena placed at the level of the surrounding countryside, the second shows a reduction in the monument's height, thanks to excavations under the floor of the arena itself, as well as the addition of an inner gallery for city dignitaries. Over time, the amphitheatre was gradually dismantled and the stone materials reused in the construction of the nearby city. Following the discovery of part of an inscription, the entire complex can be dated to the first decades of the 1st century BC.
