Falcomata promenade

Overview

"The most beautiful kilometre in Italy", said D’Annunzio. Palm trees, magnolias with exotic plants, classical palaces and late Art Nouveau, the panorama on the Strait are the setting of the Reggio Emilia promenade. Restored between 1994 and 2000 with walks on several levels, it welcomes the old and the new of Reggio Calabria. Starting from the remains of the Greek walls of the 4th century BC and the Roman baths of an imperial age domus, with traces of a portico and small heated rooms, of which traces of a black and white tiled floor have been preserved. The monuments: one to the fallen, from 1930, by Francesco Jerace and one dedicated to the Calabrian writer Corrado Alvaro, by Alessandro Monteleone, from 1965. Then there is the Arena of the Strait, the large open-air theatre, overlooking the sea and inspired by the ancient Greek theatres. There is the municipal villa with its lush gardens and finally the huge contemporary sculptures from the humanoid forms of Rabarama (Laura Epifani), inserted in the green in front of the beautiful Villa Genoese Zerbi. Finally, the most recent installation by Edoardo Tresoldi, inaugurated in 2020, is entitled Opera, an open, transparent and usable architecture composed of 46 wire mesh columns arranged in a large green space.
