Brancaleone

Overview

Brancaleone is a popular summer tourist destination thanks to the beautiful beaches on the Ionian side of the province of Reggio Calabria, in the Locride region and along the Costa dei Gelsomini. In fact, jasmine cultivation thrives here, the raw material, together with bergamot, of a flourishing perfume essence industry.

The charming ancient village of Brancaleone Superiore, perched on a hill, was abandoned following the earthquake that struck these areas in 1908.

In Brancaleone, Cesare Pavese served a year's confinement in 1935 as an anti-fascist intellectual. The room in which he began writing his literary diary "Il mestiere di vivere" is now a small museum dedicated to the writer.
