Kaulonia Archaeological Area

Overview

The archaeological remains of the ancient city of Kaulonia are located in Monasterace, in the Locride region, along the Ionian part of the province of Reggio Calabria known as Costa dei Gelsomini.

Kaulonia was an Achaean colony founded by Crotone in the 6th century BC as a defensive outpost against the nearby Locri Epizefiri. It was destroyed by the Syracusans in 388 BC and then by the Romans in 205 BC.

Today, you can admire its remains, discovered in excavations in 1912-15. The famous House of the Dragon, from which a floor mosaic from the 3rd century BC depicting a sea monster, preserved in the Archaeological Museum of Reggio Calabria, originates. Also worth noting are the Doric temple, the large sections of wall, and the urban remains with a strict orthogonal layout. Many Magna-Greek artefacts are preserved in the local archaeological museum.
