Isola di Capo Rizzuto

Overview

It is called Isola di Capo Rizzuto, but it is actually a promontory: the ancient Byzantine Asylos or Asyla insinuates itself into the azure blue Ionian Sea, where its historical and architectural riches are reflected. In particular, the link between the sea and history is represented by the Aragonese castle of Le Castella, a hamlet of the village, which stands on an islet connected to the coast by a very thin strip of land, and stands motionless, like a sentinel watching the horizon, waiting to announce the arrival of enemy ships. Also worth visiting, however, is the Aquarium, which houses 22 tanks where one can admire the flora and fauna of the local protected area and where marine habitats have been recreated. In the aquarium there is also a workshop for children, to introduce them to the culture of the sea and raise their awareness of environmental respect.
