Latronico

Overview

Latronico is defined as a "wellness" town thanks to its plethora of thermal springs. This area, and Calda in particular, is the setting for the work of artist Anish Kapoor, entitled "Earth Cinema", which aims to focus attention on the theme of water.

Artifacts dating from the 7th and 6th centuries BC, found in the caves at Calda and the Enotrian necropolis at Colle dei Greci  form the unique collection which you can see in the  Archaeological Museum, while a collection of old craftsmen's tools and farming implements can be found in the  Museum of Rural History.

Certainly worth a visit - for the important artworks inside - are the 12th-century Church of St Nicholas, the Pontifical Minor Basilica of St Giles the Abbot, and the Church of Our Lady of Grace. Another notable sight is the large stone slab in Contrada Iannazzo, where you can see the fossil of a fish dating back to about 30 million years ago. At 235 cm long, 95 cm high and with a rostrum of 30 cm, the fossil is a precious relic from the Miocene marine environment.
