Lagonegro

Overview

Situated in the valley of the Noce river, in a corner of Basilicata halfway between Mount Sirino and the Tyrrhenian Sea, Lagonegro is a picturesque medieval village rich in historical and natural attractions. Its name probably derives from the dark waters of an Apennine lake located nearby which later disappeared.

The inhabited centre is divided into two parts: the old village, perched on a promontory around the ruins of the feudal castle, where the Church of St. Nicholas, dating back to the 10th century, stands out, and the new part, characterised by a large tree-lined square known as the "Piano". The entrance to the old village, enclosed by the remains of the medieval towers and walls, is via a scenic flight of steps culminating in the entrance gate known as the "Porta di Ferro".

Birthplace of the famous singer-songwriter Pino Mango, Lagonegro is a tourist destination both in winter, thanks to the ski slopes of Mount Sirino, and in summer for the coolness of the forests and the proximity to the beaches of Sapri and Maratea.
