Francavilla In Sinni

Overview

Francavilla sul Sinni is a municipality in the province of Potenza, enclosed between the Sinni and Frida rivers, with origins dating back to around the 15th century, and located in an archaeological area where the remains of a settlement and fortified structures dating back to mediaeval times have been found (specifically in the "Piano Lacco" locality). In the locality of S. Elania, about one and a half kilometres from the town, at the confluence of two streams, you will find the very important Certosa di San Nicola, named "Turra" by the locals, of which only the remains are now unfortunately visible, founded in 1395 by Vencislao, Count of Chiaromonte. Francavilla is very interesting from a naturalistic point of view. Don't miss: the Acquafredda Shelter, the Catusa spring, the Casa del Conte area, the panoramic area of Pietra Sasso, and the geological area of the Timpa delle Murge, consisting of volcanic rocks formed on the seabed and which emerged due to tectonic movements; the three small lakes in the Avena locality and in the Caramola locality, respectively Lake Viceconte, Lake Pesce and Lake Erba. Visiting the town, do not miss the 15th century Mother Church, the 19th century Sanctuary of the Madonna of Pompei, the Chapels of St. Anthony, St. Joseph and the Assumption all dating from the 19th century, and the Viceconte Castle built in 1886. On the hill, known as Monte Catarozzo, you will find the ruins of a mediaeval construction called "Rubbio Castle", of which a large wall made of irregularly sized stones is visible.
