Ferrandina

Overview

At the end of the 15th century, Frederick of Aragon, the king of Naples, decided to move the inhabitants of the adjacent village of Uggiano to this new location. The people of Uggiano had been left homeless after a terrible earthquake and Ferrandina, named after Frederick's father, Ferrante d’Aragona, was built to give them a new home. Over the following centuries, the town also became known for the production of“felandina”, a fine cotton and wool fabric used for centuries at the court of the King of Naples. Today, Ferrandina is a town perched on the slopes of a steep hill, with large groves of Majatica olives, from which fine extra virgin olive oil is obtained. Its Catholic monuments are worth a visit, including the Convent of San Francesco, the Monastery of San Chiara and the mother church.
