Café Lanfranchi

Overview

The best café in Matera with a unique view of the Sassi

How about a coffee while gazing in awe at the Sassi di Matera? Just go to the old Café Lanfranchi, a true institution in the city. Located in Via Domenico Ridola, in front of the imposing Palazzo Lanfranchi housing the National Museum of Medieval and Modern Art of Basilicata, Caffè Lanfranchi welcomes visitors from breakfast onwards, offering pastries of all kinds and brioche filled with homemade ice cream, baking sandwiches and other first courses at lunchtime, continuing into the evening with an aperitif.

If you are lucky, or have some patience, you can find a place on the small balcony overlooking the Sassi di Matera for a coffee or a drink to sip while observing one of the most evocative places in the world from a unique perspective. Early morning and sunset are the most impressive moments for those who want postcard photos, but they are also the busiest. One thing is certain: if you know how to wait, it will be worth it.
