Arch of Augustus

Overview

A political and religious symbol, the arch was erected in 25 BC at the time of the city's foundation, in honour of Augustus, who defeated the Salassi. It was built on the main east-west public thoroughfare in the Roman period, so that it would frame Augusta Praetoria for travellers arriving from Ivrea, the ancient Eporedia. Imposing and sober, it has a single arch under which stands a wooden crucifix that was placed there, according to tradition, in the 15th century, after flooding by the Buthier torrent.
