Pineto is a little corner of paradise on the Adriatic coast of Abruzzo.
The lush pine forests bordering the sea give its name to this site of extraordinary beauty in theMarine Protected Area of Torre del Cerrano: a magnificent sandy coastline, with dunes and natural pine forests, set at the foot of a beautiful historic watchtower.
The Cerrano Tower, one of the ancient coastal towers of the Kingdom of Naples, takes its name from the stream of the same name that runs alongside it.
The visit to the tower, dating back to the 16th century, also includes a stop at the Sea Museum.
The town has a fairly recent history. Until 1920, the area was mostly depopulated. It was the Filiani family from Atri, who owned a villa here, who designed an allotment plan on this coast and thought of planting a coastal pine forest.
After an initial levelling of the land and the transport of soil to fertilise the barren sands, 2000 trees of the Pinus Pinea variety were planted.
A large number of workers were employed to irrigate the plants by transporting water by means of copper conches, and it was necessary to stem the waters of the sea to prevent them from invading the plantation.
In 1925, the hamlet Villa Filiani changed its name, taking its cue from the famous lyric \"Rain in the Pine Grove\" by Gabriele D\'Annunzio.
Pineto is now one of the most popular seaside resorts in the mid-Adriatic Sea: for the quality of its water, the cleanliness and sustainable development of its beaches and the high level of services offered, it was awarded the BLUE FLAG 201.
The town also surprises us from a cultural point of view: the Cerrano Tower, one of the best-preserved coastal forts on the entire Abruzzo Riviera, houses the headquarters of a marine biology centre and, since 2010, the Filiani Park, once part of Luigi Corrado Filiani\'s farm, has been open to the public. Through trails and cycle paths, it offers the opportunity to immerse oneself in a unique natural environment with various tree species and the presence of different animal families.
