Roccascalegna

Overview

Orange Flag of the Italian Touring Club

The village is located on a hilly strip halfway between the Abruzzo coast and the Maiella massif, around the Sangro river. The name is of Lombard origin and seems to derive from the name of a person with the meaning "steep side of a mountain", suggesting the position of the town that stands on the side of Monte San Pancrazio.

The village, immersed in unspoilt natural surroundings, is of medieval origin. Among the attractions not to be missed: the scenic castle, a defensive structure from the 11th century equipped with 4 towers, in a dominant position on the top of a rocky ledge; the church of San Cosmo e Damiano; the church of San Pietro and the Abbey of San Pancrazio, which shows traces of an ancient and glorious past.
