Capestrano

Overview

The Gran Sasso massif and the Tirino valley are home to Capestrano, a hamlet of a few inhabitants where the well-known Guerriero da Capestrano,  a sculptural limestone piece dating from the 6th century BC, currently housed at the National Archaeological Museum of Abruzzo in Chieti, Abruzzo in 1934. A reproduction of it welcomes visitors to Piccolomini Castle, which is today's town hall. In the same castle square, the 17th-century church of S. Maria della Pace, is  currently unfit for use as it was largely damaged by the 2009 earthquake.

The village is the birthplace of San Giovanni da Capestrano, which is named after a beautiful convent not far from the village. Started in 1447 and completed in 1853, the convent houses a small museum that preserves the relics of the saint.
