The opening of the Holy Door of St. Peter's and the beginning of the 2025 Jubilee

Overview

The Holy Door of St. Peter's, opened by the Pope only on the occasion of the Jubilee, is the first door to be opened, marking thebeginning of the Holy Year. In the past, the Holy Father used to strike the brick wall enclosing it with a hammer: a symbolic gesture that no longer takes place. In the days leading up to it, the wall sealing the door is dismantled and a box containing the key to the lock is taken out. On Christmas night, the Pope throws the Holy Door wide open, pushing both halves in a chorus of emotion.

The door remains open throughout the year and welcomes pilgrims who pass through it, as if to signify that their journey of conversion has reached the encounter with Christ, the "Gate" who unites us to Our Father
