Fénis

Overview

Whizzing along the Valle d 'Aosta motorway, it is impossible not to notice the fairytale silhouette of Fénis castle from afar. It is perhaps the most medieval of all the castles in the Valle d'Aosta: a forest of turrets, battlements, slits and walls make up the complex, nestled among bucolic Alpine meadows.

Of course, if you retrace the history of the castle of Fénis, you will discover that much of what you see today was modified by a massive renovation between the 19th and 20th centuries: the architects of the time wanted to make the ruins of this fortress as "medieval" as possible, pursuing the kind of neo-medieval historical reconstruction that was in vogue at the time.

The result is surprising, and to discover the art objects preserved inside the castle, all you have to do is take an in-depth guided tour.
