Rosignano

Overview

Between the Caribbean Sea and historic buildings

A popular seaside location in the province of Livorno, Rosignano Marittimolies in the Alta Maremma, along the Etruscan Coast. Its name appears to derive from the Latin Rasinius or the Etruscan Rasenna, bearing witness to its existence in ancient times. The first document to mention the locality dates back to Longobard times.

In the 20th century, Rosignano's history was closely tied to the presence of the Solvay industry. A town named Rosignano Solvay, sprang up around the factories, and the seashore experienced important and positive transformations: the white beaches, which have made this resort famous, and that resemble the colours and shades of Caribbean beaches, are the calcareous residue of bicarbonate processing. Bathing is not permitted in all stretches, however, this stretch of coastline attracts those curious about the extraordinary landscapes and those looking for captivating photographs.

In the rich historic centre of Rosignano, you will find the Civic Archaeological Museum, inside Palazzo Bombardieri, where you can admire exhibits that tell the story of the area. Don't forget a visit to Pasquini Castle, one of the town's iconic landmarks, built in 1070 at the behest of the Lorena family. Within its walls, you will find the Church of Sant’Ilario, the Medicean circular towers, from 1562, and theresidences of Minghi, Vestrini and Marini.
