Gulf of Baratti

Overview

Nature, sea and archaeology

Located on the Tuscan coast on the Ligurian Sea,

the Gulf of Baratti, in the province of Livorno, offers an experience combining the magnificent green nature of the Maremma and the blue of the crystal-clear sea with the remnants of ancient cultures.

Come and discover the Baratti and Populonia Archaeological Park, which extends over 80 hectares between the Piombino headland and the gulf. An important Etruscan settlement once stood here. In operation from the 9th to the 1st century BC, iron mines were also worked in this area. You can access the park from the Necropolis on the Gulf or from the Acropolis of Populonia Alta. From here, you can enjoy beautiful views of the gulf and the island of Elba.

Those who prefer to relax, can lie on Baratti's golden beaches, sheltered by dense pine forests where you can take a stroll and immerse yourself in the still wild nature of the Maremma. The sea waters here resemble glistening crystal, the lush coastline is teeming with flora and fauna to be discovered by snorkelling.
