Bolgheri

Overview

Between the hills and the sea

Bolgheri is part of the municipality of Castagneto Carducci and lies between the green Tuscan hills and the sea. Due to its location, it is ideal both for exploring the Tuscan countryside and for enjoying the beaches of the Etruscan Coast.

The town is known mostly for the Viale dei Cipressi, a 5-kilometre road framed by 2,400 trees typical of the Tuscan landscape sung about by the poet Carducci, and for the Sassicaia wine produced here. But it also holds some surprises to discover among the narrow streets of the historic centre and its surroundings.

In the centre, don't forget to visit the medieval castle built around the year 1000 and belonging to the Della Gherardesca family since the 13th century AD. Under its crenellated tower is the gateway to the village. On Piazza Teresa stands the Church of Saints James and Christopher, with a medieval hut façade.

In the surroundings of the town is the Wildlife Refuge of Bolgheri. It is a vast marsh, with reeds that provide shelter for many birds, but there is also a forest of junipers, ash oaks and pines that is home to roe deer, squirrels and rabbits.
